5.1 vs 7.1.4 — what's the right layout for your room?

Front Left & Right — towers or bookshelf, flanking the screen

Carry most of the movie and music output and set the stereo image. Angled slightly inward toward the main seat for the tightest soundstage.

Center channel — directly below or above the screen, handles dialogue

Carries dialogue and most on-screen effects. Matched tonally to the front L&R so voices don't sound thin against the rest of the mix.

Surround Left & Right — beside or just behind seating

Footsteps, rain, off-screen action — the ambient layer that keeps a room from feeling like it's just loud up front. Mounted near ear height, aimed at the seats.

Subwoofer — typically front corner placement for best bass

Takes everything below 80 Hz off the mains — explosions, engine rumble, low end in music. Corner placement first, then fine-tuned to the room.

Front L/C/R — towers + center

Same front-stage layout as 5.1, sized to carry Atmos' wider dynamic range at reference volume without strain.

Surround L & R — beside seating

Level with the seating row, delivering the same side ambience as 5.1 but tuned to blend with the overhead channels.

Surround Back L & R — behind seating

A rear layer so effects can travel fully around the room instead of stopping at the sides — the actual difference between "surround" and 360-degree sound.

4x Atmos height speakers — in-ceiling, front & rear overhead positions

What makes it 7.1.4 — in-ceiling modules overhead, positioned above and slightly ahead and behind the seats for rain, aircraft, and other object-based effects.

Subwoofer (can add 2nd for even coverage)

One sub handles most rooms, but a second on the opposite wall closes the dead spots a single sub leaves in a larger or irregular room.
