The short answer

eero is a simple, good mesh system for smaller or straightforward homes. UniFi is the better choice for larger homes, multi-story or masonry construction, lots of smart devices and cameras, or anyone who wants wired access points and real control over their network. UniFi costs more up front and is designed to be planned and installed by a professional. We install UniFi as our primary platform, and we'll tell you honestly when eero is enough for your home.

Head to Head

UniFi and eero: what each one is.

UniFi: managed networking

Ubiquiti's UniFi line is managed access points, switches and gateways run from one controller and app. It started in business networking and scales down to homes

UniFi: PoE access points

Ceiling access points get power and data over a single Ethernet cable from a PoE switch. That means a clean install with no power adapters, and a design built around wired backhaul

UniFi: control and security

Separate networks (VLANs) for guests, smart-home devices and cameras, per-device visibility and remote management. This is where UniFi pulls furthest ahead of consumer mesh

UniFi: cost of ownership

The networking doesn't require a subscription. The cost is mostly upfront: more hardware, Cat6 runs and professional setup

UniFi: what to watch

More design and more upfront spend, and a steeper learning curve if you set it up yourself. It works best when planned with cable runs in mind

UniFi: best fit

Larger or multi-story homes, brick or stone construction, 30+ smart devices, cameras, home offices and small businesses

eero: simple mesh

Amazon's consumer mesh WiFi. Each unit is a self-contained router or extender that you set up from a phone app, with no controller and little to configure

eero: how it's installed

Plug-in units placed around the home. Wireless links between units are the default, and you can add Ethernet backhaul between them for better performance

eero: features and subscription

Basic WiFi works without a subscription. Extras such as advanced security and content filtering belong to the optional eero Plus plan, so check the current plan details

eero: app and account

Setup and management run through the eero app and an eero account. That's easy for most people, but it offers less low-level control than UniFi

eero: limits

Simple by design. It isn't built for UniFi-style network segmentation or large wired deployments, and every wireless hop between units reduces throughput

eero: best fit

Apartments, smaller homes with simple layouts, renters, and anyone who wants set-it-and-forget-it WiFi without a design project

Where It Really Differs

Five things that decide it.

Managed access points vs. consumer mesh

UniFi uses access points that are designed to be wired and managed together. eero uses mesh units that can be wired but are designed to work wirelessly out of the box

Wired backhaul is the biggest performance lever

Each wireless hop between mesh units reduces available bandwidth, while an Ethernet cable to each access point gives it full speed. You can wire either system, but UniFi is designed around it

Segmentation matters more as your home gets smarter

A home with cameras, smart locks and dozens of devices should keep them on a separate network from your laptops and phones. UniFi supports this properly; eero is more limited

Upfront cost vs. long-term cost

UniFi costs more at the start and needs no subscription for the networking. eero costs less at the start and has an optional paid plan for extra features

Who manages it

eero is meant to be managed by the homeowner. UniFi can be, but it supports remote management and is a platform an installer can design, tune and support over time

Decision Guide

Which one fits your home?

Choose eero if…

Your home is smaller or has a simple layout, you want easy setup, you're renting, or your budget matters more than control. A good eero system is a real upgrade over an ISP router

Choose UniFi if…

Your home is large or multi-story, has brick, stone or plaster walls, runs 30+ devices or cameras, or you want wired access points and separate networks for smart-home gear

Already have eero?

Keep it if it works. Consider UniFi if you still have dead spots after adding Ethernet backhaul, you're adding cameras and smart-home devices, or you want segmentation

Not sure?

Questions

Common questions about UniFi and eero

Is UniFi better than eero?
It depends on the home. eero is a simple, reliable consumer mesh system that works well in smaller or straightforward homes. UniFi uses managed access points that are typically wired with Ethernet, which gives better coverage, capacity and control in larger homes, multi-story or masonry construction, and homes with many smart devices and cameras. UniFi costs more up front and is designed to be planned and installed by a professional.
Do I need wired access points?
Not always, but wired backhaul is the biggest single factor in WiFi performance. Every wireless hop between mesh units reduces throughput, while an Ethernet cable to each access point gives it full speed. For larger homes, multi-story layouts, brick or stone walls, or homes with dozens of smart devices, we strongly recommend running Cat6 to each access point. eero also supports Ethernet backhaul if you run the cable.
Does UniFi have monthly fees?
UniFi networking doesn't require a subscription. You manage it through the UniFi app or web interface. eero's basic WiFi also works without a subscription, but some extras, such as advanced security and content-filtering features, are part of the optional eero Plus plan. Plans change, so check current details before you buy either one.
Can I use eero with Ethernet cables?
Yes. eero supports wired Ethernet backhaul between units, which helps performance noticeably. The difference from UniFi is the hardware and control: UniFi access points are powered over the same Ethernet cable (PoE) and give you finer control over networks, segmentation and settings.
Which is better for a smart home with cameras?
UniFi, in most cases. Separating your smart-home devices, cameras and guests onto their own networks (VLANs) keeps a compromised device from reaching your laptops and phones, and UniFi supports that segmentation. A home with many cameras and IoT devices also benefits from the capacity of wired access points.
Is UniFi hard to manage after it's installed?
It's more capable than a typical consumer system, but day-to-day use is simple once it's set up correctly. The UniFi app shows connected devices and lets you make changes, and UniFi supports remote management, which makes ongoing support easier. The complexity is in the design and setup, which is why most homeowners have it installed.
Do you install both UniFi and eero?
We install UniFi as our primary platform, and we're a UniFi partner. We also work with eero Pro and other systems when they're the right fit. During a free on-site WiFi survey we'll map your coverage and tell you honestly whether eero is enough or UniFi is worth the extra investment.
