Site Survey — map your home, identify dead zones

We walk every room and floor of your home with a WiFi analyzer. We map existing signal coverage, identify dead spots, assess wall materials, and locate your ISP's entry point and existing wiring. We also count your connected devices and categorize them (main devices, IoT, streaming) so we know what the network needs to handle before we spec hardware.

System Design — AP placement, switch sizing, cable routes

Based on the survey, we design the full network. AP locations are chosen based on your floor plan — ceiling center of each zone, away from interference sources, positioned for maximum overlap coverage. We route cable paths through walls and ceilings, select the switch size, and spec the gateway. You get a written quote with hardware list, cable runs, and expected coverage before anything is ordered.

Installation — in-wall Cat6, AP mounting, switch rack

Installation day: we run Cat6 through walls to each AP location, terminate with keystone jacks or patch panel connections, mount access points at ceiling or wall locations, and install the switch and gateway in your network closet, utility room, or wherever makes sense. Every cable run is tested with a cable tester before we close anything up. We clean up after ourselves — no debris, no loose cable, no patch holes left open.

Configuration — SSIDs, VLANs, QoS, smart home integration

With hardware in place, we configure everything. SSIDs for main household, IoT, and guest networks. VLAN firewall rules. QoS prioritization for video calls, streaming, and smart home controls. Band steering to push capable devices to 5 GHz. We migrate your existing devices to the new network and verify coverage in every room. Before we leave, everything is labeled, documented, and verified working — including your smart home system integration.

Do I need wired ethernet or will mesh WiFi be enough?

It depends on your home. For smaller homes under 2,000 sq ft with simple layouts, a quality mesh system with wireless backhaul can work. For larger homes, multi-story layouts, homes with brick or concrete walls, or any home running 30+ smart devices, wired backhaul is dramatically better. Wireless mesh cuts available bandwidth in half at each hop. With wired backhaul, every access point gets full throughput. We do a site survey before recommending which approach fits your specific home — we'll be honest if wireless is sufficient.

Can you fix WiFi dead zones without running new cables?

Sometimes. If the dead zone is caused by poor AP placement, repositioning hardware or adding a wireless-backhaul mesh node can help. But for dead zones caused by building materials (brick, concrete, metal studs), distance from the router, or specific room requirements, wired backhaul is almost always the better long-term solution. We'll assess your specific situation and tell you honestly whether a wireless fix will work or whether cable is the right call. If cable runs aren't feasible in a specific location, we find the best wireless alternative for that spot.

Will a better network help my smart home devices work more reliably?

Yes — dramatically. An estimated 90% of smart home reliability issues trace back to the network, not the devices. Smart bulbs dropping offline, automations running late, cameras buffering, voice assistants missing commands — these are almost always network problems. A properly designed network with the right AP placement, sufficient device capacity, and IoT VLAN isolation resolves the vast majority of smart home reliability complaints. How many access points do I need for my size home?

But square footage alone isn't the right spec tool — wall construction, floor plan shape, and where you need coverage all matter. A 2,000 sq ft home with thick plaster walls may need 3 APs; a 3,500 sq ft home with open floor plan may need 2. We do a site survey before recommending AP count. Guessing based on size alone is how you end up under- or over-shooting.

Do you install Cat6 ethernet drops in existing homes?

Yes — this is a significant portion of our Lancaster County work. We fish Cat6 through existing walls cleanly using low-voltage brackets, surface-mount boxes, and existing wall cavities where possible. Common locations: ceiling AP mounting spots, home office desks, TV walls, gaming rooms, and network closets for patch panels and switches. We minimize visible surface-mount cable wherever possible.
